ISS Expedition 12 Commander Bill McArthur, KC5ACR, has proven to be one of the more active Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) operators among ham radio operators who have occupied the space station. In fact, McArthur's having so much fun operating from space that he's hoping to complete Worked All Continents (WAC), Worked All States (WAS) and maybe even DXCC from space.
"Bill McArthur continues to be active on voice and now has a couple of personal goals he is trying to achieve," says ARISS Ham Radio Project Engineer Kenneth Ransom, N5VHO. "He is trying to talk to someone in every state in the United States. According to his log, he has managed to work 37 states so far." In addition, Ransom says, McArthur wants to work as many countries as he can.
"He's off to a good start with 28 DXCC entities in his log as of December 12," he said. "These contacts have been with amateur stations on every continent with the exception of Antarctica."
States on McArthur's most-needed list are Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia and Washington. McArthur is about halfway through his approximately six-month duty tour aboard the ISS. He and crewmate Valery Tokarev will return to Earth in April.
The NA1SS worldwide voice and packet downlink frequency is 145.800 MHz. In Regions 2 and 3 (the Americas, and the Pacific), the voice uplink is 144.49 MHz. In Region 1 (Europe, Central Asia and Africa), the voice uplink is 145.20 MHz. The worldwide packet uplink is 145.99 MHz. All frequencies are subject to Doppler shift. Ladies on the Air
A new website/discussion board: www.ladiesontheair.proboards37.com has been set up for women radio amateurs. The brain child of Jackie Bosworth, M3JTO, the website called Ladies on the Air provides female hams with a place to discuss their hobby.
Jackie who gained her foundation licence in May launched the website with the aim of encouraging more women to participate in amateur radio.
She said: After noticing that there aren't too many women in this hobby, I decided to create a forum just for the ladies. It's still in the early days but we already have members from Malaysia and USA !
Ladies on the Air is open to any woman who is interested in amateur radio. Membership is free. The site includes a discussion area, a hints and tips section, advice on solving amateur radio problems and a place where members can post pictures.

Contest Corner

The Tri-Town contest crew has been putting W9VT on the air from the Bunker this year. It has been a good test of the bunker, its equipment and antennas. Also, our operators have been improving their skills as evidenced by higher scores in each succeeding contest. Last February we worked the FISTS (cw) winter sprint (standings not posted yet). In early March we worked the ARRL SSB DX contest. Our latest event took place on the last weekend in March when we worked the CQ SSB WPX contest. Jim NV9X was the event leader with Dave N9LGP, Tom AB9LA and Jerry K9PMV also operating .

Band activity was very good considering that we are in a solar minimum. It was interesting to me to work into Europe and South America so well on 40 meters. Most of those contacts were worked "split band"; the dx on the low end, us on the high end. Usually, 40 meters is a very different band when Im net control on Saturday mornings. One of our more notable dx contacts was AP5 Pakistan. We have been experimenting with different logging software for contesting. All of it seems to work well; my biggest challenge though, is retrieving the data for submission to the contest sponsor. The more contests we do, the more we learn.
There are two contests in May that we would like to work; both of them are CW.
First is the FISTS spring sprint held at 11:30 am on Saturday, May 13th. Second, the CQ CW WPX contest will take place on the last weekend in May. We invite all club members and visitors to come out and join in the fun. You can take a turn at operating or just watch. Remember, Field Day is just around the corner.
